The Wilhelm Tell Express combines travel by rail and waterway. And it's difficult to say which is the most beautiful part of the journey – the lovely lake cruise by historic paddle steamer from Lucerne to Flüelen (nearly 3 hours); or the connecting train trip to Locarno along the Gotthard line (2 hours). One thing is for sure. The Willhelm Tell Express is definitely not an express. But it is one of the most scenic routes in Switzerland. The train winds its way from an altitude of 470 to 1110 metres, and the route includes the 15-kilometre Gotthard Tunnel linking the northern with the sunnier southern side of the Alps.

Did you know...
....that when traveling by train to Locarno you see the tiny church of Wassen no fewer than three times? And each time from a different angle? No, it's neither a mirage nor magic. It's simply that the train has to loop round the church three times to gain height where no space is available....that you can travel on the Wilhelm Tell Express in two versions? Either "Standard" or Premium". The "Standard" version includes a voucher to a value of CHF 19/EUR 16 for use in the ship's restaurant. The "Premium" version includes a 3-course menu on the ship and, on the train, a welcome drink as well as exclusive travel in the 1st class "Salon Liberté" furnished with special swivel chairs.
