5. We’re landlocked.

But a water wonderworld.

Just imagine. You climb aboard a ship. And send your thoughts on a journey to the breathtakingly beautiful backdrop of snow-capped mountains in all their majesty and magic. What could be more soothing and serene than the gentle rolling of the waves? This may be a country without a coastline. But you can explore landlocked Switzerland by ship on its many rivers and lakes. Just climb aboard. Lake Lucerne, Lake Geneva, Lake Zurich, Lake Thun – which waterway is your favourite?

Making a plash.

Switzerland has no coastline. But when it comes to water we can certainly claim a record or two. For example, you’re never more than 15 kilometres away from a lake – we have 1484 of them. Did you know that the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen are the largest in Europe? That the Rhine and the Rhone – two of Europe’s longest rivers – have their sources in Switzerland? That the Bernina Pass is the watershed between the Black Sea and the Adriatic? Or that Europe’s largest freshwater fleet of steamships is to be found on Lake Lucerne? Welcome to our wonderland of water!

6. We take you to the top.

Switzerland has no fewer than 48 4000-metre Alpine summits. And many other superlatives. Did you know that the Jungfraujoch (3454 metres) is the highestaltitude railway station in Europe? That the Vitznau-Rigi railway (1871) is the oldest mountain railway in Europe? That the Wengernalp Railway
(19.2 kilometres) is the longest cogwheel railway on the continent? Or that the Pilatus Railway from Alpnachstadt to the Pilatus Kulm (48% gradient) is the steepest cogwheel railway in the world? Get high with the Swiss Travel System!
